DC Comics Character to Come Out As Gay

DC Comics
DC Comics plans to reintroduce a character as gay, comic blog BleedingCool.com reports.

DC Comics co-publisher Dan DiDio announced the plans over the weekend at Kapow Comic Convention in London, saying that the existing superhero who was previously assumed to be straight will be “one of our most prominent gay characters.” He did not specify in which issue the reveal will occur.

President Barack Obama: Same-sex couples should be able to get married

The news comes a year after DiDio told The Advocate that he only intends to introduce new characters in the DC universe as gay rather than make existing ones gay. Of the change in plans, DC Comics Senior VP Bob Wayne told BleedingCool.com that DiDio’s view “has evolved,” echoing President Barack Obama’s recent endorsement of same-sex marriage.

The gay DC superhero won’t be the first gay comic book character. In 2010, Archie Comics introduced gay student Kevin Keller, who later got married. Marvel Comics will reportedly feature the first gay superhero wedding between Northstar and his boyfriend in next month’s issue of Astonishing X-Men.

This combo of 2014 file photos shows Iowa Democratic senatorial candidate, Rep. Bruce Braley, left, and Republican senatorial candidate State Sen. Joni Ernst. Iowa is a state with a relatively small number of veterans and no military bases, yet the hotly contested Senate race here is heavily focused on the military. The recent scandals surrounding veterans' health care and the air strikes against Islamic State militants in Iraq mean the troops are on people's minds. (AP Photo)
