DES MOINES, Iowa — Eight ideas were proposed as a way to lure Drake students away from drinking this Friday night and a large pie fight ended up at the top of the list.

The Drake Student Activities Board is encouraging undergrad students to forgo the bars and house parties in favor of the pie fight.

“We asked student organizations what ultimate event they’d like to see happen,'” said Greg Larson, student body president-elect and vice president of the Drake Student Activities Board.

Organizers said they need 671 participants to toss the custard pies in an effort to break the Guinness World Record for largest custard pie fight.

The 1:30 a.m. pie fight will be preceded by other alcohol-free events, including: Casino events, a bags tournament, sushi-making workshops, swing dancing, laser tag, a hypnotist and a headphone disco show at the Olmsted Center.

The event is part of a new effort to curb student alcohol use. It starts at 10 p.m. on Friday and ends around 2 a.m. on Saturday at the Olmsted Center and parking lot.
