NEW YORK (AP) — The NFL has announced new standards of punishment for players involved in domestic violence incidents.

Commissioner Roger Goodell detailed the new policies in a letter to NFL owners, according to USA Today.

Players will be subject to a 6-week suspension for their first domestic violence offense and could face a lifetime ban for subsequent offenses.

The move comes in the wake of public backlash over Ravens’ Ray Rice, who received a two-game suspension after being involved in a physical fight with his then-fiancée back in February.
