“Late Show” host David Letterman has announced that he will retire from his long-running show in 2015.

The news was confirmed via various news sources and on social media. Letterman also announced his retirement on the Thursday night episode of his show.

Letterman told his audience, “I phoned (CBS President Leslie Moonves) just before the program and I said, Leslie, it’s been great, you’ve been great, the network has been great, but I’m retiring.”

Letterman has sat at the desk of “The Late Show with David Letterman” since August of 1993. He’s faced increasing competition from Jimmy Kimmel on ABC and Conan O’Brien on TBS, as well as the strong debut of Jimmy Fallon on the “Tonight Show” on NBC.

Letterman is best known for his top 10 list, as well as a feud with NBC after not being offered the “Tonight Show” after Johnny Carson left in 1992.
