It’s been four years since Nu Metalers Disturbed brought us new music. Their last album, Evolution, featured the smash hit, “Are You Ready”, as well as “A Reason to Fight”, “No More” and “Hold On to Memories”.
In that time, the band has been enjoying family life and writing. Frontman David Draiman collaborated with other musicians like Hyro the Hero and Nita Strauss. Drummer Mike Wengren joined forces with two friends and opened Steel Tank Brewing CO, in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin.
After a few days of teasing on social media with their mascot, The Guy, and 30 second snippets, Disturbed dropped the song and coinciding video for “Hey You”.
Now, before you go “oh great, another freaking cover”, rest assure, this is NOT a cover of the Pink Floyd classic. It’s no secret that Disturbed KNOWS how to do a cover. I mean, look at the monster success they had with Simon and Garfunkle’s “The Sound of Silence.” Even before that, they have covered Tears for Fears, Faith No More, even Sting.
This is an all new original song that packs a pretty punch. In fact, I find it reminiscent of the sound the band dropped on us in their 2000 debut album of The Sickness. Wengren attacks his drum kit like he’s mad at it. Couple with chunky riffs being laid down by bassist, John Moyer, this song will make you grit your teeth in a good way. Blistering riffs from guitarist Dan Donegan will have you running for the pit like you hair is on fire. And of course the undeniable distinct voice from frontman David Draiman, combines growls and melody along with lyrics that express anger we all feel in a world that is so full of negative energy.
“It’s a wake up call. We’ve become our own worst enemies. Civil discourse has become the exception instead of the norm. People have lost themselves in outrage addiction.”
~David Draiman
All of these elements are beautifully spun up into hooks that will take root in your brain and you will gladly let it live there rent free.
I’ve been blessed to call everyone in this band “friend”. Hell, “family” really, as I’ve known them since 1999, right before they exploded. I’ve been honored to watch their evolution (no pun intended), their growth and their success continue thru these years. For me, it’s been four years too long and I’ve been jonesing for today to be here. Now, I’ve got myself a fix that will be on repeat as I await redosing with a full album due out later this year.
