When Foo Fighters made the decision to continue on in the wake of tragedy, they went full steam ahead. Not only a new album with But Here We Are, but they hit the road shortly after and haven’t slowed down since.

The band currently just wrapped up their first round of dates, doing some festivals and overseas dates, including Saturday in Japan at the Fuji Rock Festival. The ripped through a 16-song set list covering some Foo favorites along with a couple of tracks from the new album.

Five songs into the set, the band welcomed fellow festival artist, Alanis Morrisette to the stage to jam together. But it wasn’t a Foo Fighters or an Alanis song they chose to share with the audience. Instead, they took the moment to pay tribute to Sinead O’Connor who passed away last week.

The 56-year-old O’Connor was a singer, songwriter and political activist who wasn’t afraid to make waves to draw attention to things like the Catholic church and the pedophilia that’s been going on. She did that by ripping up a photo of The Pope during her performance on Saturday Night Live in 1992. Her biggest hit was a cover of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2U”. She has struggled with her mental health for years and with the death of her son last year, it pushed her to her edge. While her cause of death is still unknown, the world has been pouring out tributes, fans and fellow musicians alike.

So during their performance Saturday night, the Foos and Alanis joined forces to show their love and respect for Sinead by doing what I think is her best song. I mean, she did great with a heart wrenching version of Prince, but this is the song that first introduced me to her. I remember seeing the video on “MTV’s 120 Minutes”.

Sinead had a unique voice with hella range and I think while in some parts Alanis may have struggled with some notes, overall, it was a solid performance that served as a great treat to the fans in attendance and those worldwide not only as a goodbye and thank you to Sinead but bringing a cool collaboration to the show as well.

So here you go, Foo Fighters and Alanis Morrissette putting their spin on “Mandinka” from Sinead O’Connor.
